A medical battery is not simply an energy source. In a patient monitor or portable ventilator, the battery becomes part of the equipment’s power continuity strategy. During ICU movement, ambulance transport or an unexpected AC power interruption, the backup system needs predictable output and sufficient current capability rather than simply a large capacity number. This 14.4V 3000mAh pack uses 12 high-rate SC NiMH cells in a 12S1P configuration, providing 43.2Wh of rated energy and up to 15A continuous discharge capability. NiMH chemistry is selected where stable, mature rechargeable chemistry and high-rate performance are required as an alternative to lithium-based systems. For OEM medical equipment designers, the objective is straightforward: match the battery to the host system’s voltage, current, charging method, thermal limits and available space before production begins. 🛡️ Engineered Around Temperature, Structure and Host-System Integration

Inside the pack, the 12 SC cells are arranged in a compact 2×6 layout and enclosed with medical-oriented white UL94 V-0 flame-retardant PVC heat-shrink film. FR-4 insulation plates are added at both ends, while high-purity nickel interconnections are secured by spot welding. The protection architecture intentionally avoids unnecessary active battery-management electronics. A 105°C thermal fuse and resettable PTC provide passive protection, while two 10KΩ NTC sensors are positioned inside the cell array to provide independent temperature feedback to the host equipment through the JST XHP-5P interface. Pin assignments can be customized for OEM integration. The pack is designed around 0°C to 50°C charging and -10°C to 60°C discharge conditions, with internal resistance controlled to ≤150mΩ. Standard charging is 300mA for 15 hours, while 0.5C fast charging can be used with appropriate -ΔV termination control. Each production configuration should ultimately be validated against the host equipment’s charging and protection strategy. For a medical battery, these details are not decorative specifications. Can this 14.4V NiMH battery pack provide enough current for a portable ventilator?
The pack is rated for up to 15A continuous discharge based on the specified high-rate SC cells. Whether this is sufficient for a specific ventilator depends on its peak load, operating profile, minimum system voltage and cable losses. HIMAX recommends confirming the host device’s actual current waveform before finalizing the battery configuration.
Does this NiMH battery pack use a BMS?
No active lithium-style BMS is required for this configuration. The pack uses a 105°C thermal fuse and resettable PTC for passive protection, while dual 10KΩ NTC sensors provide temperature feedback to the host equipment. The final charging and system-level protection strategy should be controlled by the medical device design.
Can the JST XHP-5P connector and NTC pin configuration be customized?
Yes. The shown JST XHP-5P configuration is an OEM reference design. Connector type, pin assignment, wire length, wire gauge and NTC configuration can be adapted to the host PCB and mechanical requirements. Custom samples can be evaluated before mass production.
The specified standard charging method is 300mA for 15 hours. A 1.5A fast-charge profile can be used with appropriate -ΔV termination and temperature monitoring. NiMH charging should not be treated like constant-voltage lithium charging; the host charger must be designed around the battery chemistry and the approved charging profile.
