Reliable 12V NiMH Backup Power for Emergency Systems

10Ah D-Cell NiMH Pack with Temperature Sensing, Rugged Insulation and OEM-Ready Connections

🔬 Engineered Around the Needs of Emergency Power

Emergency lighting and fire safety equipment cannot choose a battery by capacity alone. The battery must remain dependable while sitting on standby, tolerate repeated recharge conditions, and deliver stable backup power when normal power is interrupted. This HIMAXBATT pack uses ten 1.2V 10Ah D-size NiMH cells in a 10S1P configuration, providing 12V nominal voltage and 10Ah capacity. The 120Wh nominal energy is a direct result of the cell configuration, while the 10K NTC sensor gives the host charger or UPS controller a practical temperature input for charge management. For equipment designers, the benefit is straightforward: the battery is engineered around the actual standby environment rather than treated as a generic 12V power source. The current design targets emergency lighting, fire safety equipment and standby UPS applications where predictable backup behavior matters more than headline energy density.

🛡️ Temperature Awareness and Physical Protection

Temperature and mechanical protection are often the details that determine whether a standby battery remains reliable after years of installation. The pack uses a blue UL94 V-0-rated PVC heat-shrink sleeve, internal barley-paper electrical insulation and EVA cushioning at the cell ends. A 0.2 mm nickel strip is used for spot-welded series connections, while 18 AWG UL1015 red-and-black leads provide the external power connection. The current engineering specification covers charging from -10°C to +60°C and discharge from -20°C to +70°C, subject to validation with the selected high/low-temperature NiMH cell. A 10KΩ NTC at 25°C with B=3950 provides passive temperature sensing. The pack also supports a Molex 5557-series four-position interface, allowing the connector, lead length and harness arrangement to be adapted during OEM development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Before selecting a NiMH battery for emergency lighting or standby UPS equipment, engineers usually need answers beyond voltage and capacity. Charging method, temperature sensing, cell configuration, connector definition and system-level compliance can all affect whether a battery pack works reliably inside the final device. The following questions address the practical points most relevant to OEM battery selection and integration.
Is this 12V 10Ah NiMH battery suitable for emergency lighting and standby UPS systems?
Yes. The 10S1P configuration provides 12V nominal voltage and 10Ah nominal capacity, making the pack suitable as a rechargeable backup power source for emergency lighting, fire safety equipment and compatible standby UPS designs. Final suitability depends on the host equipment’s required discharge current, charging profile, operating temperature and installation space.
What does 10S1P mean for this NiMH battery pack?
10S1P means ten 1.2V NiMH cells are connected in series, with one cell in each parallel position. The series connection produces 12V nominal voltage, while the single parallel path keeps the pack capacity at the cell rating of 10Ah. This configuration provides 120Wh nominal energy under the stated specifications.
Why does the battery pack use a 10K NTC thermistor?
NiMH charging behavior is temperature-sensitive, especially during long standby charging or higher-rate charging. The 10KΩ NTC at 25°C with a B value of 3950 provides a temperature-dependent resistance signal to the charger or UPS control board. The controller can use this signal to monitor battery temperature and apply its own charging protection logic.
Can this NiMH battery remain connected to a standby charger for long periods?
It can be designed for standby or intermittent charging, but the charger must use a NiMH-compatible charging strategy. The current specification references a 0.02C to 0.05C low-current maintenance range and a 0.1C standard charge for 16 hours. Continuous charging conditions should be validated with the selected cell, ambient temperature and host charger before production. NiMH should not be treated as a simple constant-voltage battery chemistry.
Can HIMAXBATT customize the connector, cable and dimensions of this NiMH battery pack?
Yes. The current design uses a Molex 5557-series four-position connector with 18 AWG UL1015 leads and approximately 200mm cable length. For OEM projects, HIMAXBATT can customize the connector family, wire gauge, cable length, lead direction, pack dimensions, insulation structure and NTC specification according to the host device. Sample validation is recommended before mass production.
